Stone Farm Cottage
The Stone Farm Cottage proved to be a truly one-of-a-kind project, as it presented a multitude of challenges that required careful consideration and innovative solutions. The cottage seamlessly integrated a traditional cob/stone farmhouse with a thoughtfully designed two-story extension that cleverly incorporated an original stone outbuilding on the ground floor.
Our primary objective was to tackle several ongoing issues that had been plaguing the cottage for years. These included poor thermal efficiency caused by a previous barn conversion in the 1990s, an impractical layout, and a lack of cohesion between the old and new sections of the house.
Furthermore, we aimed to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the cottage and establish a stronger connection between the interior spaces and the breath-taking panoramic views outside. Despite encountering logistical obstacles such as limited parking and weight restrictions on the narrow lane, we successfully brought our client’s vision to life.
Our dedicated team worked tirelessly to preserve the cottage’s timeless charm while infusing it with a contemporary edge, resulting in a harmonious fusion of classic character and modern design.
Cottles Quay
Nestled in Salcombe, South Devon, lies the captivating Cottles Quay, once a charming nursery adorned with lush gardens. Within its premises, a weathered boat shed stood, serving as a practical storage space.
Our skilled team was presented with a remarkable opportunity, as we were entrusted with the task of transforming these structures into an exquisite two-story, two-bedroom house. Additionally, we were commissioned to construct a remarkable amphibious annexe, boasting two luxurious bedrooms.
The ingenious design for this ambitious project was meticulously crafted by the esteemed BACA Architects, who journeyed all the way from London to lend their expertise. Collaborating with them was the highly regarded Techniker, renowned for their exceptional work on the prestigious television show Grand Designs, where they showcased their impressive engineering skills.
Given the unique challenges posed by the site’s location, we had to employ innovative techniques and utilise specialised equipment to carefully dismantle the existing structure and manage the resulting debris. Our unwavering commitment to precision and meticulous attention to detail remained steadfast throughout the entirety of this endeavour.
The Oaks
The Oaks began as an incomplete, standalone structure, elegantly situated on a steep slope facing north. It took solace beside the esteemed Duryard Estate and nestled harmoniously alongside the prestigious university.
However, over the course of ten years, the project underwent a gradual metamorphosis, devoid of any fully realised elements and without adherence to conventional construction methods.
The owner, driven by a deep commitment to sustainability and cost-effectiveness, fervently expressed the desire to safeguard the two-story framework. After meticulous evaluation, the approved proposal was deemed excessively intricate, covering a substantial 407 m2 area, and financially burdensome to execute.
Consequently, we embarked on the endeavour with a renewed perspective, embracing a more modest and eco-friendly approach. Our objective was to prudently utilise the existing structural framework, endeavouring to preserve as much of the original infrastructure as is practically feasible.
